An Unconventional Wreath for Fall Using Deco Mesh and Chevron Burlap

I have a very eclectic style. I love farmhouse, shabby, beach, cottage, French, and rustic with the odd industrial thrown in for good measure! Sounds like an identity crisis, right?

I just like what I like, and I have no qualms about mixing styles. Luckily, that is very trendy thinking in decorating today, so I'm not weird, I fit right in (smiley).

When I set about making this wreath, I intended it to be part of my fall decorating. I didn't want traditional fall colors. Not only am I not crazy about orange but I love things that can do double-duty and function in more than just one capacity.

So I picked colors that just make me happy. Green, yellow, and pink, with a burlap-colored base. I can see this being the perfect spring wreath and even to celebrate a birthday. Basically it could stay on my door all year if I was so inclined. I'm including affiliate links for your convenience, my full disclosure policy is available here.

Deco mesh is a product I hadn't worked with before but wanted to try. What attracted me was that it is supposed to be much more weather-friendly than burlap, and resistant to sun-fading. After having to throw away 2 burlap wreaths that didn't last longer than a year, I was ready for something more permanent! I chose a natural color deco mesh resembling burlap and wove it through a wire wreath form, pushing it from the back to form the loops. I love the fullness it creates.

Next I added the striped ribbon and the green chevron, just weaving them in from the back to create loops between the deco mesh. The yellow polka-dot ribbon was added last. I just wove it around the wreath, keeping it in place by securing with pipe cleaner every few inches.

A big bow and a custom painted monogram finish it off.

All the decorative ribbon was bought at Hobby Lobby. I found they had the best selection and I can always count on that 40% off coupon! They have a great selection of ribbon, in all kinds of colors and patterns. After wrapping the middle of my bow with the striped ribbon, I left long tails and used those to attach the bow to my wreath, tying tightly.

The monogram was one of those 'happy accidents'. I had painted the wooden letter gray but it really didn't look right with the rest of the colors.

That's when I got the idea to replicate the look of the striped ribbon on the monogram.  I had all the acrylic paints already in my stash. I used various sizes of brushes and, not worrying about perfection, just painted.

I did leave some of the background gray showing through as one of the stripes. Outlining it in black sharpie helps it to really pop. When it was dry, I waxed it so that it would be protected from the elements.

This wreath is now ready for any weather! It's unique and makes me smile every time I come home and am greeted by it hanging on my door!
