Spray Paint a Thrift Store Jewelry Chest

Updating a Thrift Store Jewelry Chest with a Spray Painted Pattern

This post follows on the heels of my previous one where I showed you how I updated storage boxes with paint.. Both are projects that I did as part of my Master Bedroom makeover.

This jewelry chest was a thrift store find but it was just blah. It had a long scratch across the front drawer, dirty handles and I knew I wanted to do something with it, I just didn't know what.

When I began to make-over my Master Bedroom, I decided to do a graphic paint treatment on this jewelry chest. I wanted a two-tone look with some of the original wood showing through because it is a nice, dark mahogany shade.

I chose gold stripes. After removing my handles, I just starting taping off a pattern, being very careful to match both sides. My goal was to be able to spray paint the large scratch on the middle of the top drawer so I worked around that.

I also used Antique Gold Rub n Buff on the handles...you can see the striking improvement that made! They went from almost black to a nice, antique gold...I left a little of the old patina on them.

The finished jewelry chest is a huge improvement on the plain and boring chest that it was. Now it's unique and original! I love the gold sheen that it has!

I did have some trouble when I pulled off the tape; it left a gooey mess behind. When I wiped it off, some of my paint was removed. Instead of freaking out, I just went with it and actually took it a step further and rubbed a bit more off myself.

It looks a little bit antique this way. Not perfect. I like it better.

Nothing in life is perfect, after all!

Have I inspired you to think 'outside the box' and maybe paint something you hadn't thought about painting?

Just do it! It's fun and if you don't like it....well, you can always paint over it :)

I've been in Memphis this week attending Orientation at the University of Memphis with my son. Go Tigers!! It's a beautiful campus (all brick) and every staff member we've met has been so friendly and helpful. Even though it's been information overload, just being here and seeing where my son will be living and learning for the next 4 years of his life has made me breathe easier as his mom!!

  4. How did you remove the handles from the jewelry box? I'm having a hard time removing some on a box I have without harming it.

    1. Lena, thanks for your question. Actually, my handles pulled right out; I'm having to try to fix them because they come out when I try to open the box and then I can't get to my jewelry :/ If you're worried about damaging your handles, I would just cover them. You can either use frog tape or simply take a small piece of tin foil and wrap it around the handles. That way you can spray paint and it won't affect them.
