DIY Wall Decor and a Homemade Chalkboard

Vintage Find Makeover and DIY Chalkboard

Friends, today I'm sharing another project from my Master Bedroom reveal! If you're new to
DIY beautify, you need to go check out the full reveal so you know what I'm talking about! That stenciled wall was a doozy but I'm so glad I did it! It makes the room!

As with my other master bedroom projects, this one was an upcycle.

The other projects I've already completed and shared have been my painted storage boxes which now have a fun and fresh modern vibe, and an upcycled jewelry chest that got a touch of bling with gold spray paint. I also created knock-off Ballard Designs curtain panels for my Master Bathroom at a fraction of the price of the Ballards originals.

This project is a favorite because it is unique and a true trash-to-treasure!
(in my humble opinion)

I found this forlorn metal rose mirror/candle holder thingy at a church yard sale. You've seen these before. It was missing the mirror but had a shabby sweet look to it and for $2, I was sure I could do something with it.

It sat in storage for over a year until I finally decided to paint and refresh my Master Bedroom, and I knew what I wanted to do with this piece.

Sometimes projects just speak to you and tell you what they want to be...this was one of those times! This one wanted to be a chalkboard!

DIY Chalkboard to fill an empty frame

You can see above what I did to achieve this.

I decided to use poster board (YES, poster board) for my chalkboard. Why? Mainly because of how narrow the piece needed to be to fit between the grooves at the back (remember, this was a mirror...mirrors are thin!). I wasn't sure if I could find any wood that would fit the bill.

Also, I knew I wanted this chalkboard to have a permanent saying, 'let's sleep in!'...this wasn't going to be a chalkboard we'd be writing on repeatedly...so I just needed it to work for my saying and artwork.

I cut my poster board to size, sprayed it with 3 coats of Rustoleum's chalkboard paint, and seasoned it with chalk. Before I added it to the frame, I gave it a little stability with some cardboard pieces, cut to size.

I also spray painted the roses with a beautiful silvery gold metallic (Krylon's Champagne Nouveau).

Let's Sleep In DIY chalkboard

Here it is all finished.

Quite a difference, right?

I have a couple more projects to share with you that I've completed in my Master bedroom, so watch for those to be up soon! I hope you've enjoyed this project and been inspired to see something old in a new light!

What can YOU create from something forlorn and forgotten??
