Barn Wood Sign

 DIY Barn Wood Sign

If you live in middle Tennessee, you will find an old, dilapidated barn...it's just down the road and around the bend, up one hill and down the other, through the canopy of trees and along the creek, past the cows.

The barn is barely hanging on. Pieces of old barn wood have fallen off the structure and lay where they've fallen.

I considered it my duty as a responsible citizen to remove a couple of pieces that had fallen off and were {almost} lying in the road....wink.

I didn't want anyone's tires to pop...out there in the middle of nowhere...with only the cows to see.

I brought my barn wood pieces home and decided to make a sign.
A sign for my newly painted, stenciled and updated master bedroom. A sign to hang above my beautiful thrifted headboard. A sign that would perfectly depict love and marriage and just what it  means to stay with someone you love.

The piece I used reminded me of an arrow, and I pictured it pointing to our future together. I sanded it well to smooth the surface, admiring the age, nail holes and obvious signs of wear.

Marriage is kinda like old barn wood...
...it's seen its share of weather (good and bad}
it's had to struggle to hold up when storms come
and it shows signs of wear and tear.
It might be a little wonky,
and it's certainly not perfect!!
Sometimes it crumbles under the pressure.
Sometimes it can lay discarded where it falls...
ignored, overlooked, forgotten...until someone comes along and picks up the pieces...
and makes it something beautiful again!

A few days later, I was showing off my updated master bedroom to a girlfriend. She saw my painted barn wood sign, squealed and wanted to know where on earth I'd found a sign in the shape of TN?! (she's thinking, I'll "always and forever love TN"....)

Um...is it bad that I didn't even recognize my state when I looked at this piece of barn wood...?

Yeah, that's embarrassingly similar :)

(Disclaimer: as a Canadian girl born and bred...having lived in the beautiful states of CA, OR, FL and now TN...can I be blamed if I see 'shapes' where others see 'states', lol??)

Ah well, it sure looks pretty in my room...

  2. Love this, and how cool that it's in the shape of TN (even if you didn't notice right away!). I have a similar sign that say "Eat, Drink & Be Merry," and I love it:)

  7. Cindy, this is a really fun and original sign. I love the contrast of the weathered barn wood with the chiseled (rosewood? or other precious wood) of the bed. Tre's chic.

  8. I am planing on painting an old fence post from my farm this weekend. Just wondering, did you use any primer or would you recommend a certain type of paint? I love the way your paint looks and this is what I'm hoping my finished product will look like!

    1. Thank you so much. You might be surprised to hear this, but I just used plain old acrylics. I have a great supply of colors. I did sand my board very well prior to painting the letters but no primer was used, and I didn't finish it off with any kind of top coat either. I really just wanted a worn, rustic look. I even went over the letters, once dry, with my palm sander to remove some of the paint.
      Good luck with your sign!
