Christmas Decorating on a Budget

I'm sharing my Holiday Home Tour and tips for getting the most out of your Christmas decor

I'm sure a lot of you are like me...

...you have lots and lots of Christmas bins in your attic.

And while shopping for new Christmas decor is very enticing...

...you're really better off to just shop the attic!

Every year after the holidays I'll buy one or two things on clearance that I love.

And I make myself let go of something that I no longer care for.

That way I stay in relative control over the chaos in the attic!

It's easier on the wallet too!

So I'm happy to share a tour of my home this year, brought to you by my attic!

Welcome to my home

Holiday Home Tour DIY beautify blog
I created this wreath for my front door using items I had (the tin vintage sign) and a couple things I bought from the thrift store...namely the grapevine wreath form and the swag. A little craft wire was all it took to bring all the elements together. The icing on the cake is the real pine branches that I tucked in to add fullness and that great pine smell.

My entryway table is where you may have seen my Thanksgiving Tree. To decorate it for Christmas, I simply switched out the ornaments. I was so excited to use my DIY chalkboard ornaments; they were one of my favorite projects from last year. All the ornaments on this tree are handmade!

If you've never spray painted branches white...you need to do that project asap! I did mine years ago and use my white frosty branches all the time. I love them here with the red cardinal ornaments I purchased years ago. The ornaments look better as a set than randomly placed on my Christmas tree.

Inside my piano room, I layered items on the piano top (one of my favorite places to decorate as it can function just like a mantel). I purchased the tobacco stick star new this year at a craft sale.

The piano room is also home to my newly decorated and nature-inspired flocked tree, discovered recently at the thrift store. You can click over to find out how I made it work even though it had a broken stand.

My living room is home to our 9-foot pine tree. It made a tight fit, but is definitely festive! If you'd like to make your own drop cloth tree garland, I have a tutorial here.

Christmas Mantle and Tree DIY beautify blog
Nothing new was purchased for this room, although the shutters on the mantle are new (curbside find by a friend), and I created the wreath from items I had. Come back Wednesday for a tutorial on how to create your own Berry Monogram Wreath.

Santa's elves seem to have been busy...

Candles, pine cones, milk glass and greenery keep the mantel simple yet merry.

The room is filled with lots of color...which is my favorite way to decorate for Christmas! My gingham coffee filter tree is sitting on the console.

I used tree greens and my DIY drop cloth and burlap trees to make this coffee table centerpiece. If you want to make your own burlap trees, click here for a tutorial.

My children have a large collection of Christmas books and we display their favorites in this pallet wood caddy that Mr DIY made.

The chandelier in my dining area is where I hung my crystal ornaments. They always seem to get lost on my tree, so I tried this and really like the effect (just ignore the silk tulips in the background...I haven't decorated the top of my black country hutch for Christmas yet!)

Hang ornaments from light fixture www.diybeautify.com
I wrapped some ruffled red burlap around the light fixture, as you'll see below.

I created the table centerpiece by layering a glass platter, then a berried wreath, and stood a candle holder in the hole of the wreath. I filled the center hole with 3 strands of gold ball garland that I wasn't using elsewhere.

Here's a close up so you can see what I'm talking about. Using a platter as the base makes it much easier to remove the centerpiece from the table.

I hung my shabby ornament wreath on my white hutch. I love how the colors go with the collectibles I have on display inside the hutch. Can you believe I found most of them at thrift stores for a couple bucks?

Upstairs in our bonus room, I finally found a place to hang our stockings!

The old dresser that I painted to make a farmhouse TV console was the perfect place and it adds a festive touch in that room. Don't you just love our crazy mix of stockings and how nothing matches (and Mr DIY's is facing the 'wrong' way but it was made by his grandma and Santa is crocheted on only the one side)!

Little DIY's pink tree is up here as well. She decorated it entirely by herself, and it looks beautiful in front of the window.

Her clever idea to use a Santa hat as a tree topper inspired me to do the same on our big tree!

This idea emphasizes the point of this post...Christmas decorating can be done very inexpensively...and if you don't have something, you really don't need it! Look at what you do have and find a way to make it work.

I decorated my whole home for only $26!

I hope I've inspired you that a beautifully decorated home for the holidays doesn't need to be out of reach. If you have an ounce of creativity, you can do the same...

Hang your favorite ornaments from your dining fixture....

Or spray paint a bunch of branches white, stick them in a jar, vase, urn (whatever you have) and hang your favorite ornaments from them!

Clip some of your tree branches and poke them into your Christmas wreath to take it to the next level!

Make a centerpiece for your table by layering a platter, a wreath and a candle.

You can totally do this!

See you Wednesday for a tutorial on how to make the Berry Monogram Wreath you see on my mantel.
