Cinnamon Candy Popcorn

cinnamon candy popcorn

When I was growing up in western Canada in the 70's and 80's (yes, I am that old!), there was one sure thing at Valentines in my home...

...Red Hots, otherwise known as cinnamon hearts. I don't remember conversation hearts back then, but these crunchy, spicy cinnamon candies were always a given.

A few years ago, I stumbled across a recipe for cinnamon popcorn in a Taste of Home magazine...using Red Hots! I made it and gave it out as gifts and everyone loved it.

Then, like happens with so many things, a few years went by when I couldn't find Red Hots anywhere (if you check the back of the bag, it says it's made in Canada...hmmm....). So I was delighted when I spotted them at the Dollar Tree this year...6 oz bag for $1? I'll take 4 thanks!

Here's how to make the popcorn...

Ingredients

8 quarts (32 cups) plain popped popcorn
1 cup butter
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 package (9 oz) Red Hots

* Place popcorn in large bowl and set aside
* Add butter, corn syrup and candies to a sauce pan
* bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly
* Boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
* Pour over popped corn and mix well
* Add to two greased cookie sheets with rims
* Bake at 250 degrees F for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes
* Place on waxed paper to cool
* Store in airtight container

You'll have to trust me when I say this smells really good while it's baking! I mean, come on..popcorn, candy and butter? What's not to like?

It cools very quickly and then you can bag it in cute cellophane bags, like I did, and give it away as gifts...if there's any left to give away that is!

A cute chevron bag and gingham ribbon make this look so festive and perfect for gift giving? My daughter's teacher is going to be the lucky recipient of this yummy treat. It's a fun treat for Christmas, Valentines, or any time of the year.

  1. OH I used to love red hearts...haven't had them in so long. I also love cinnamon popcorn which can only be bought through the gourmet popcorn sights and is expensive, so I'm going to pin this and try it.
Thank you for sharing and stopping by my blog!
    Have a great weekend :)
