To run or Not to run...

So...confession time.

I can't run. Yep, I own running shoes....but I don't run in them! They are great shoes for standing all day baking chocolate chip cookies (my other part time job!)


I've always admired long distance runners who are able to propel their bodies forward for miles at a time. They make it look effortless.

I've tried to run. Several years ago Mr DIY and I decided we'd go for a run every morning. It was going to be our 'thing'. I bought new running shoes, cute little stretchy shorts
and I was all ready to go running for 2 or 3 miles with my man (didn't matter than running had never been my thing). I had the cute outfit...I was good to go.

Except....it didn't work.

I lasted a block. Maybe less.

It's not so much that I was out of shape (although, let's be real, I was)...it's that running didn't feel right. My feet were tripping over one another, slamming into the pavement, and I couldn't get enough breath. It didn't feel natural. I was a clumsy, stumbling mess...a far cry from those runners who glide so light on their feet.

So Mr DIY ran...and I walked. So much for 'together' time!

When Little DIY told me she wanted to join the school running team, and run at 7 in the morning before school no less,  I was SO proud....and a little worried.

"You do know what running is, right?" I asked her (thinking, she's going to hate all that sweating and puffing and stumbling around). "Uh, yeah mom," she responded, (her eyes were saying 'duh'), "I like to run."

And she does. She's good. With her long legs, she's fast and she eats up the track! She loves to be in front, and she seems to fly. She has the stamina and ability that her poor momma doesn't have.

There's just one little problem....

She gets dehydrated very quickly. It doesn't just happen when she runs, it's any time she exerts herself physically. When she gets dehydrated, it comes with a bad headache, and an achy, listless body. It's no fun...for her or for me.
