Vitamix and Power Smoothie Recipe

We are big smoothie fans, and in a minute I'll share my favorite Power Smoothie recipe with you. It comes together in about 2 minutes thanks to our Vitamix machine, the hardest-working appliance we own! I'm in love with this machine and will never buy another over-priced smoothie again. But if you think smoothies are all the Vitamix can do, you are in for an eye-opening surprise! Smoothies are just the tip of the iceberg!

The Vitamix is my favorite kitchen appliance and has replaced many of my appliances! Use it to effortlessly make smoothies, soups, nut butters and so much more! I'm sharing my favorite smoothie recipe as well as the top 5 reasons why I love my Vitamix at diy beautify!

Hopefully you and I have a certain level of trust by now and you know that I never promote products that I don't love myself. The people at Vitamix are not paying me anything to share my opinion...I'm simply sharing an amazing appliance that has transformed our kitchen.

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen some of the smoothies I've shared. People ask about my smoothies all the time...maybe because I brag that I can make a fabulous smoothie in less than 2 minutes!

Here is a picture of my own Vitamix (I took the picture yesterday), and it's about 10 years old! Affiliate links are included for your convenience. My full disclosure policy is available here.

About 8 years ago, while strolling through Costco before the holidays, Mr DIY and I were transfixed by a Vitamix demonstration. We watched in awe as the demonstrator made first a hot soup, then a smoothie and finally ice cream...all in a matter of minutes...using the same machine! He used whole foods (fruits and veggies that still had their skins on!) in his smoothies and we were amazed at how smooth and creamy everything was...no chunks or grittiness at all.

After sampling each item as it was made...and marveling at the smooth texture, great taste and ease of use, we were sold. We purchased our Vitamix 5200 as our 'couple Christmas gift' that year and have been loyal users ever since.

You may have heard of the Vitamix, or maybe you haven't. Either way, if you are in the market for not only a blender, but a multi-purpose appliance that can do a wide variety of kitchen tasks, this might be the machine for you too. Especially if you are looking for a quality appliance that won't need to be replaced a couple years down the road.

If you're one of those people who love specs, you can go here to read all about the fabulous Vitamix motor and horsepower and other good stuff that makes the Vitamix blending machine such a workhorse.

As a satisfied owner, I want to share my top 5 reasons for why I love my Vitamix and recommend it to family and friends (even after years of owning it).

5 Reasons why I love owning a Vitamix:

1. It's durable! I'll be the first to admit I'm a klutz and regularly drop and break things...like my expensive food processor, which is missing parts because I dropped it. Nothing has broken or gone wrong with our Vitamix. It's built to last. In fact, my younger brother has my parent's old Vitamix (that they purchased in the 80's) and still uses it today! There are only 4 pieces to the machine, which means less to break!

2. It's fast and easy! Like I said before, I can make a smoothie in a couple minutes! If you've ever ordered a smoothie at the mall, this is the same type of high-performance appliance that they use. Plus, there is really nothing complicated about it. There's an ON/OFF switch, a HIGH/VARIABLE switch and a switch with speeds (that work with the Variable switch). I'm going to show you in a minute how easy it is to use with a short video.

3. It pulverizes whole foods! In seconds, the Vitamix easily pulverizes an unpeeled apple, carrots with the peel, kale, whole nuts and more. It crushes and pulverizes everything to a fine blend. The peels of many fruits and veggies contain the most nutrients, so it's important to eat whole foods as often as you can. It's great fiber and I love being able to sneak it into my kids smoothies, and they don't even know it! It also crushes ice with ease.

4. It cleans itself! Nothing is worse, in my opinion, that a great appliance that has a ton of parts and is difficult to clean. The Vitamix is so easy to clean. You simply fill it halfway with water and a drop of dish soap, turn it on and let that awesome horsepower go to work. It's clean in a few seconds. Simply rinse it and you are done!

5. It's versatile! Like I mentioned before, you can make soups, smoothies, ice cream as well as nut butter, batter, dips, juice, grind your own flour, even make your own chocolate hazelnut spread! Check out all the uses from the Vitamix website right here.

Like most people, I have my favorite uses (although after checking out the Vitamix site I'm realizing I really need to expand my horizons and use it much more!)

So, what do I use my Vitamix for?

Almond (or any nut) Butter

You've likely seen organic nut butters at the store. They're not cheap! And they're certainly not fresh. I buy raw, whole almonds from Sam's Club and make my own almond butter.

I just throw in about 4 cups of raw almonds, put the lid on and process it. The efficient horsepower motor effectively chops, blends and chomps through those nuts in just a few minutes. I'm left with amazing, fresh almond butter that is so good on my toast in the morning or with apple wedges. Making homemade peanut butter is just as simple.

Smoothies

I've already told you that I can make a fresh smoothie in under 2 minutes! Whether it's a fresh fruits and veggies blend, or my favorite Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Power Smoothie...it's so easy in my Vitamix.

I made a short video that demonstrates how easy it to to make a smoothie in this machine. Click the picture below to watch the Vitamix in action.

Did you see how it pulverized those whole almonds and ice? I dare you to try that in your blender.

Here is the recipe that you saw me make in the video.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Power Smoothie

  • 1 cup almond milk (regular or chocolate; I also love using a coconut/almond blend and cashew milk)
  • 1 Tablespoon peanut butter protein powder (I like this one by PB Fit) or 1 Tbsp peanut butter
  • 1/2 scoop chocolate whey protein (this is the one I use)
    • Note: if I'm drinking this after a workout, I will use the full scoop
  • 1/4 cup raw old-fashioned oats
  • handful of raw almonds (or any nuts...always more cost-efficient when you buy a large bag and store them in your freezer to keep them fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon raw flax seeds
  • 1/2 frozen banana (it's already in  my machine below)
  • handful of ice
I add everything to my Vitamix and blend, using the tamping tool to push any chunks (like the ice and banana) down into the blade. The tamper never actually reaches the blade, it is simply to assist with moving chunky things towards the blade.

This smoothie is so good, and makes a great breakfast as it's packed with protein, fiber and nutrition and takes me easily all the way until lunch and often beyond. The consistency is smooth (no chunks!) and it is really deliciously satisfying.

A Vitamix is a big expense...I think we paid almost $450 ten years ago...but this is the last blender you'll ever buy! You can purchase the Vitamix directly from their website, but you might find a better deal at Amazon.

When you consider the versatility of the Vitamix blender - make ice cream, smoothies, soup, nut butters, grind flour and coffee beans, crush ice - it turns out you're getting a lot for your money.

The Vitamix will replace any blender you currently own and even some of your food processors and other appliances. Plus, you will never have to buy another over-priced smoothie again because you'll be able to make your own, in just minutes.

If you have any questions at all about the Vitamix blender, I would be more than happy to answer them. I'm by no means an expert, just a very satisfied owner. If you already own a Vitamix, I'd love to hear about your favorite way to use it.

If you can't afford a new machine, consider purchasing reconditioned! Right now you can save $100 on a reconditioned blender at the Vitamix Warehouse Sale!
