Let's take a look at the Inspiration Image and then I'll show you my take on it. It comes from Birgit at Crafting While I Wait.

I love this sweet vintage cloche and all the vintage inspired ideas on Birgit's post. If you're a vintage lover too, make sure to check them all out!

Sometimes I'll go shopping to find a piece or two that helps me pull together my own look for these challenges, but this month I challenged myself to use only what I already owned and I'm so happy with the direction it took.

These are the elements I took away from the inspiration image:

  • vintage vibe
  • the color red
  • buttons
  • glass cloche and jars
Let me show you how I decorated with these items to add a vintage Valentines vibe in my front room.

Ideas for Vintage Valentines Day Decor

I love decorating the primitive pine hutch in my front (sitting) room, and as I started brain storming and pulling items out to style it, I got the idea to create a little Cabinet of Curiosities - not in a creepy way but more of a collected way that draws your eye and makes you want to see more! Just think of your favorite antiques or thrift store...in fact, wouldn't that be a dream job? I could happily play all day styling vintage afurniture nd gorgeous items.

Valentines vintage decor with buttons, glass cloche, jars and red accents

I have lots of thrifted vintage items that I don't decorate with much but I can't bear to get rid of them because I do love them. One of these is a set of vintage glass spice jars that I found at the thrift store years ago. You can click here to see how I remade a vintage spice rack to hold my buttons, sorted by color, in my office when we lived in our previous home in Tennessee.

I added a few of the little glass spice jars (find similar here and here) filled with white buttons to my pine hutch. One is tipped over, spilling its contents, another is added inside a small glass cloche with a transferware saucer as a base. The red saucer and vintage style key gives a nod to Valentines but in a subtle way.

SHOP CLOCHES

I've used my existing vintage and antique ironstone and transferware pieces to fill the bulk of the hutch, with the smalls being the more interesting, curious bits.

Mixing a little new with the vintage, I have a few vintage looking keys as well as some DIY clay hearts, decoupaged hearts and Sola wood flowers. I kept out the shabby gold heart ornaments that I used on my green and gold Christmas tree in my dining room this year and they work beautifully in this vintage Valentines cabinet.

I brought in my rusty vintage scale and added a red transferware tea cup to the top and a glass spice jar of pearl beads next to it. See the DIY clay heart at the bottom? You don't need to shop the seasonal aisle to decorate for Valentines Day! Just a touch of red or pink, anything heart shaped and you're there! I get more bang out of my decorating buck by using items I already own to decorate for the seasons without it feeling overly commercial.

On the little dresser next to the hutch, I continued the vintage Valentine decor theme with another cloche.

I added a vintage red Bingo card and a ticket inside my larger glass cloche. This one is meant to hold a clock, but I bought it for a song at a clock store that was closing. To elevate the Bingo card, I inserted an ironstone pudding cup upside down, and topped that with a vintage flower frog (see similar here). The cards were easy to tuck into the spiky parts of the metal frog and stand upright.

It doesn't get much simpler than that! I also made this vintage inspired red wood Valentine and I'll be sharing the quick tutorial later in the week.

I filled the old metal urn I recently found thrifting with some decorative cotton balls, a pink ribbon, pinecones and a string of pearls (it's intended use is a Christmas garland). This little vignette feels woodsy and wintery and the pearls and tarnished urn continues the vintage vibe.

I love the neutral vintage Valentines feel I created with just a touch of red and I hope you're inspired to use items you already own (or maybe borrow a few from your mom or grandma - wink) and put together your own vintage Valentines decor!
