How to Make Inexpensive Shiplap Ornaments from the Dollar Store

dollar store shiplap ornaments

Welcome back!

It's all things Christmas over here and today I'm sharing a tutorial for these inexpensive shiplap ornaments!

These jumbo ornaments started off life as Dollar Tree finds...so they were just a buck each!

I was drawn to the corrugated metal ornament tops and decided to give them a diy beautify dose of farmhouse charm!

I'm sharing the tutorial today as part of the Cozy at Christmas Holiday Blog Tour. It's a week-long tour filled with lots of great ideas for you to replicate at home! You'll find all the links and participating bloggers at the end of my tutorial.

SUPPLIES FOR SHIPLAP ORNAMENTS

HOW TO MAKE SHIPLAP ORNAMENTS

These jumbo DIY ornaments started life as cute decorations from the dollar store. The shiplap marks are just painted on and it's hard to see, but there's quite a lot of glitter.  I decided to give them a whole new look.

I used pliers to carefully remove the metal tops because I planned to reuse them.

Then I took a sanding sponge to knock back the shine and the glitter. Here's a before and after.

Next I gave the pieces 2 coats of white chalk paint. I used Dixie Belle Paint Company Chalk Finish Furniture paint in Cotton and it went on like a dream! This paint has very little odor which is nice when you're painting indoors!

The next step was to recreate the shiplap lines. Remember, this ornament is just thick cardboard, so I couldn't actually cut through it.

I marked lines with a straight edge and used my Dremel tool to create the look of shiplap planks by just moving the Dremel along my straight edge at each marked spot. I'm not sure what the tip is called that I used...it looks like a piece of pointed sandpaper! Anyone know?

I didn't press hard enough to cut, just enough to remove the paint and make visible lines.

Now that my base was done, I created some designs in PicMonkey and uploaded them to my Silhouette cutting machine.

I cut each design out of matte black vinyl and used transfer tape to perfectly center them on my large ornaments.

I carefully reattached the tops, and now they're ready to hang on my tree!

Here's a closer look.

They have a real chippy farmhouse feel and best of all, they add the look of shiplap!

Friends, we're going to get real here today and talk about an embarrassing topic, a topic that nice girls usually don't discuss in public!

The subject today is poo y'all and you're going to need your sense of humor. So if it's still sleeping, go pour yourself another cup of coffee and come on back.

I'll wait 😊
