Love Never Fails Sign

Back when Mr Diy and I got hitched it was all starry eyes and fairy tales! Perfection...and I foolishly thought it would last forever!

I had a beautiful dress, a diamond ring and a handsome guy to call my own...

I was living in the moment.

I said my wedding vows with all the joy and love that my heart could hold. It was full.

We used 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 as part of our wedding vows:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeing, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protect, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

I humbly confess to you that I was focused entirely on the last 2 sentences of this verse...and paid absolutely no attention to the part at the beginning...you know, the part that makes you squirm a little bit as you read it! I was young, stupid  naive and I readily admit that I was caught up in the fairy-tale romance of  "happily-ever-after". I was prepared to ride off into the sunset with my dashing groom and live without a care!

But marriage is so much more than just a pretty wedding, isn't it?

Marriage is wonderful at the best of times...but it's also bills and selfishness, sickness and crying babies, stress and arguments and hurtful words. The reality of marriage was an unwelcome wake-up call to the foolish girl that I was!

The past 21 years of marriage have been a constant test of our love and perseverance.

It's called LIFE.

Pain and Heartache. Grief and loss. Anger. Resentment. Selfishness. Unkindness. Pride.

The stress upon a marriage is great at the best of times. During hardships, it is manifold.

Do I still love him?

YES!

Is loving always easy?

NO!

Besides raising kids, marriage is the hardest thing I have ever done! I don't think that starry eyed girl would have believed me if I could have told her...she had her head in the clouds!

I just wanted you to know my heart behind today's post. My 'Love never fails' sign isn't just a pretty sign. I wanted something displayed in my home that would have meaning, something pretty that would be a reminder of who we are and WHAT we are to each other! What we've been through and where we're going!

I had Mr. Diy cut some pieces of plywood to the same lengths. I sanded them down so they would be easier to paint and then I used cut shims to attach them together. I simply staple-gunned them together at the back.

I love that they're kind of bowed and irregular. Imperfect.

It reminds me a little of us...two imperfect people brought together...having to bend a little in order to make it work and to meet the other where they're at.

I gave the boards a couple coats of white paint before I stapled them together.

Then I sanded the surface so it would be nice and smooth in preparation for the painted letters.

I found a couple of fonts I liked online and printed off my words in the sizes I needed. After lining them up where I wanted them, it was time to transfer the letters to my boards. In order to do this, I ran a gray piece of chalk on the backside of each letter, taped the letters in place and traced over them with a pen. The image transfers to the board..just enough so you can see to paint it; keep in mind it's just chalk so if you mess with it before painting it, you will likely rub it off. I kept my letters covered until I was ready to paint them.

Here it is in picture form...

Here it is all done but before I sanded it to distress it...

The distressing is the perfect touch with the imperfections of the boards!

And while this might just look like a pretty farmhouse sign to anyone who sees it in our home...

It means so much more to me!

It's always a good time to resolve to be more loving...and as we head to Valentines Day, let the "season of love" spur us on!!
