Fall Door Decor

I love burlap! It's cheap, comes in a variety of patterns/colors and just looks great however you use it.

I was inspired by some amazing burlap pumpkin door hangers on Etsy, like this turquoise and orange one, this monogrammed one and this one with giant polka dots.

For my pumpkin, I cut the same basic pumpkin shape from burlap.  If you're not comfortable cutting a free-form shape, make a template first with cardboard, trace around that onto your burlap and then cut it out.

I chose to leave mine natural in color, rather than painting it or doing a cute pattern on it like the above pumpkins. Just personal preference. Using my Cricut machine, I made a stencil of the words 'Welcome Fall' with craft vinyl. If you're confused...the stencil is just the stuff left behind after you pull the letters off!

Burlap is very textural and I wasn't sure the vinyl would stick to it, but it did, at least enough to complete this project :)  I pressed down very firmly along all my edges.

A small amount of black paint was all it took to paint in the stencil, using a pouncing motion. Too much paint would have seeped under the stencil edges. When I was done, I immediately pulled my stencil off. Nice, crisp edges!

I used orange paint to 'draw' some lines and also painted a narrow border around the edge for dimension.

Finally the small stem shape was cut as well, painted green and hot glued on.

Once the paint was dry, I hot glued the top half together, leaving an opening at the bottom.  I stuffed my pumpkin with a few plastic grocery sacks and then finished gluing it shut.

Stiff black wire was poked through each side of the top and the ends curled to keep them from pulling out. The pumpkin door hanger hangs from the wire and the ribbons and raffia finishes it off.

I love the texture! And considering all I had to buy was the burlap, which is cheap, this project delivers a long of bang for very little buck! Love that :)

What's hanging on your door to welcome fall??

  11. They are all cute, your version is as much or more. Love it and it does look easy. The picture on my monitor looks as tho you used white burlap? did you? I guess I'll just use my plain old brown stuff. Might use paint cloth for backing tho, making it easier for me to put together. It's very cute and mostly I love that it's different. Have a template handy that's big enuf so will get busy when I get off this machine. Great tutorial and glad you shared this adorable project. Happy week
