Piano Room Reveal

Yesterday when I shared my Ornament Wreath  with you, you got a little peak at our piano room. Today you are getting treated to the full reveal! Hope you enjoy!

When you walk into our home, immediately on the left is a small room with French doors that also opens up into the kitchen. It is actually the formal dining room. It's very small for that purpose, so we don't use it that way.

We've chosen to make it a cozy piano room. I found this amazing antique piano a few years ago for free on Freecycle.org. I took piano lessons as a girl and now little Diy is learning how to play. By the time this is posted, she will have just had her first recital! She is doing fabulous! She plays by ear - and continually amazes me with her God-given talent!

The top of the piano is a perfect place to rest another large mirror, display photos, a large monogram, the driftwood/dropcloth/burlap sailboats I made this summer. Of course it gets changed out frequently!

The chair we're using in lieu of a piano bench is one I found at a yard sale for a few bucks. It was dark wood with a dated cushion. I think the back design is called a 'spider web' (for good reason). It's a beautiful chair, with lots of raised designs, which are brought into focus more with the creamy white paint. The seat was recovered in Osnaburg, a flax-colored fabric.

The pair of wing chairs were slip covered, by me, in drop cloths! I had just found Miss Mustard Seed's blog and was amazed at what she did with the simple drop cloth. It was like a whole new world opened up! When she came out with her video slip cover tutorial...including how to make custom piping, that did it for me! I watched the whole thing first and she made it look totally do-able. I found some wing chairs at a thrift store and sewed my own slipcovers, with her coaching all the way! I am not an avid seamstress, although I have sewn things out of necessity as well as for fun, along the way. This was a Major challenge, and they certainly are far from perfect... but I'm very proud of them. My favorite part? the pleats!!

Did you notice my smocked burlap curtains? Aren't they gorgeous?? I spotted them in the dining room of the amazing KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms. I was able to find the same ones (on clearance...with a discount code & free shipping - whoop!). Although, I hafta tell ya... it smelled like a barn in that room for quite awhile after I hung them up, lol! But it was so worth it, they bring the perfect amount of texture to the room and such a natural color.

The little round table we bought from neighbors who were moving. It stayed brown for a few years... until the painting bug bit me :) I like it so much better with the antique white paint and dark glaze treatment and the little blue drawer. It feels like it has some personality now. This was one of the very first pieces I ever painted with chalk paint.

I can't forget about the chandelier. When we lived in Florida, I decided that I really wanted a crystal chandelier to hang over my garden tub in the master bath, but I only wanted to spend about $50. I started scouring thrift stores, Goodwill, and Craigslist. I found a couple but they were more than $200. I searched for months before finding this one on Craigslist. The owner had just listed it and I happened to be the first person to respond. I got it for $50, can you believe it? All glass crystals, the real deal!! It looked pretty amazing over my tub in FL... here in TN this room seemed like the perfect place for it. I just love the contrast of the burlap and the crystals! I know, I need new bulbs! Don't ask me why I thought the frosted would look better than the clear. What was I thinking??

Are you wondering about the beautiful beveled mirror? Can you believe I found it at Goodwill for less than $15? Its fake gold paint was peeling and it just looked rough. But I saw tremendous potential and the mirror itself with its beveled edge was in mint condition! I gave it a creamy white makeover and decided to highlight the corner moldings in a different color. Duck egg blue just felt right. It got a dark glaze and then waxed. This may be one of favorite pieces of all time!

The last piece of furniture in the room is a bookshelf that we purchased at an estate sale years ago when we lived in Oregon. I didn't really want a bookshelf in here, I wanted a chest or cabinet.

The problem was....

Do you see what's ON the bookshelf? Yeah, those. All those scrapbook albums. I made all those, back in my scrapbooking heyday. This is the reason I finally stopped. Those albums are big... and heavy... And you need somewhere to store them...and I have at least, (cough), twenty-one completed. At least.

So the bookshelf has to stay... For now... Until I come up with a better idea.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really proud of my scrapbooks... It's fun to sit with the kids and look through them and read about the funny things they said and did and to see how they have changed over the years. Looking through the scrapbooks evokes so many memories!

I just wish there was a better way to store them because they take up a ton of space!

Anybody out there have a solution, besides adding on to the house??

So there you have it. Another room in my home revealed.

I hope you've enjoyed this little tour...

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a blessed day, friends!

  7. It's a beautiful room, Cindy. I love your chairs as well ~ especially the pleating! You seem to have good luck with craigslist and thrift stores so you might be able to find a small armoire or cabinet with doors to store your scrapbooks full of all those wonderful memories!

    1. Oh, that's a great idea JoAnne; they're so big though, it would have to be a pretty deep cabinet. But thanks for the idea and for your sweet comments!
