Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe

These soft sugar cookies have been a family favorite for years! I'm so grateful to my friend Laura for sharing the recipe with me. Her trick of dipping the cookies with frosting is a keeper too, and makes decorating these sugar cookies a breeze!

If you're like me, you've tried many different sugar cookie recipes over the years to find that perfect one.

Maybe you like a crunchy sugar cookie with a soft center. My favorite is a big, soft, puffy sugar cookie.

You might be surprised at what keeps these sugar cookies moist...
it's sour cream in the dough!

Weird right? But you don't taste it and would never know it's in there.

I made this recipe using my turkey and pumpkin cookie cutters.

Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe

1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
2-2/3 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/8-1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup sour cream

Mix the first 5 ingredients together until well mixed.

Sift together dry ingredients and then add to wet mixture and combine.

Add sour cream and mix in well.

This mixture is wet and sticky, so it's best to refrigerate for a couple hours.

Divide dough in half and roll out half the dough onto floured surface. I love using this extra large silpat pastry mat because it keeps the mess contained and it's so easy to clean!

Roll the dough fairly thick (1/8-1/4").

Cut out with cookie cutters and transfer to baking sheets.

Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes. You want the cookies to still be white and just starting to lightly brown around the edges. Just like this.

Cool cookies completely. Then frost them.

Here is the best trick I ever learned for easily and quickly frosting cookies with a smooth top.

You'll need one container of  Becky Crocker Cream Cheese Frosting.

HOW TO FROST SUGAR COOKIES THE EASY WAY:

1. Dump frosting out into a microwave safe bowl, add food coloring of your choice and mix.

2. Heat in microwave for about 20 seconds, to melt the frosting.

3. Dip tops of cookies into frosting and immediately add sprinkles.

4. Let frosting set.

Yield: 24-30 cookies, depending on size of cutters

Absolutely delicious...soft, slightly sweet...and that little hint of nutmeg is perfect.

They make a great breakfast with a nice, hot cuppa joe :)
