Thanksgiving Tray from a Cupboard Door

My Thanksgiving decor this year consists mainly of pumpkins, candles and leaves! So when I knew I needed to come up with a turkey-themed tutorial for this month's #Makeit Challenge, I decided to make something that would be functional as well as cute - a turkey bread/cheese tray! I'm including affiliate links for your convenience. My full disclosure policy can be found here.

I had some cupboard doors left over after I remade my hutch into a coffee bar so I removed the hardware from one of them, filled the holes, glued round wood craft balls to the bottom, one in each corner, for feet, and painted the whole shebang creamy white.

I found a vintage turkey graphic at The Graphics Fairy, my favorite resource for graphics of a vintage nature. I used the Mod Podge method to transfer my image to my project.

How to Mod Podge an Image to Wood:

After printing out the turkey, I cut around the edges so that no white remained. Then I applied a thin, even layer of Mod Podge to the front of the graphic (not shown). I laid it onto my painted door with the color, glue-side-down, smoothed it out and left it to dry (24 hours). Once dry, I lightly sprayed it with water and started rubbing the paper off just using my finger. My image is left behind! You can see how I goofed in a couple spots and took off  more than I wanted to. Oh well, it adds to the vintage feel :)

(keep in mind that if your graphic has words, you'll need to reverse it before printing
so you're words are readable!)

Next I printed out the saying I used, We Are Thankful, onto regular printer paper. Using an Exacto knife, I cut out the letters, leaving a stencil behind. I taped the words into place and applied Burnt Umber acrylic paint with a stencil brush.

Everything got a coat of clear wax for protection. The glossy surface also makes it easy to wipe crumbs off.

I spray painted a couple of cabinet pulls hammered bronze, and attached them to the sides. This way it's easy to pick up the tray to transport it from the kitchen to the room where we're hanging out and desperately in need of snacks!

There is no edge so I probably wouldn't use it for heavy objects or drinks that could easily slide off. However, it's perfect for simple, light snacks...chips and dip, cheese and crackers, bread and butter, pumpkin and turkey sugar cookies...you get the idea.
