When Mr DIY and I got married (waaaaay back in 1992), my sweet M-I-L presented us with a recipe book, filled with handwritten family favorites. It even mentions who in the family loves each recipe!

Armed with this valuable resource, I set out to fool my husband into thinking I was the world's greatest cook by making all his favorites! ๐Ÿ˜‚

These Chocolate Chip Meringues are one of his top favorite homemade treats of all time. The recipe even adds some sage advice..."Hide from Chris or all will be gone in one evening!" ๐Ÿ˜

Welcome to the February installment of Thrifty Style Team. We're veering away from our normal home decor related projects, and sharing some of our favorite dessert recipes for Valentines Day! I can't wait to see all the yummy desserts.

Dessert for dinner?

So here's where I tell you that, aside from sweets, it took me years to become a good cook! I remember coming home from work, taking a package of ground beef out of the fridge, and wondering how on earth I was supposed to turn it into something delectable for dinner!

I eventually figured it out, and Mr DIY and I laugh now at some of my early attempts at cooking! I have several family favorite recipes here on the blog, you can see all my recipes here.

We both love chocolate, and these Chocolate Chip Meringue Kisses certainly deliver. What I love about them is that they're bite-sized, so you can eat one or two and feel satisfied without the guilt! Keep reading for a printable recipe card.

  • 2 egg whites at room temperature
  • dash of salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (I omitted because I wanted bright white meringues)
  • 3/4 cup sugar, divided
  • 1-1/2 cups mini chocolate chips

How to make Chocolate Chip Meringue Kisses

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat egg whites with cream of tartar, salt and vanilla (if using) until soft peaks form
  3. Add 1/2 cup sugar in a thin, steady stream, with mixer running constantly until stiff peaks form (stop and scrape down the bowl once or twice)
  4. In a separate bowl, stir chocolate chips with remaining sugar
  5. Gently fold chocolate chips and sugar into meringue
  6. Cut 1" off end of a piping bag and fill with meringue mixture
  7. Cover baking sheet with waxed paper and pipe meringue kisses*
  8. Bake for 30 minutes
  9. Turn oven off and let meringues cool inside oven with door closed overnight (or for several hours if you bake them during the day)
  10. Store in an airtight container.

* if you don't have piping bags, you can simply drop meringues by teaspoon onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, but for Valentines Day, it's worth a little extra effort to make kisses!

You and your loved ones will have a hard time resisting these crunchy, melt in your mouth chocolate treats!

To make this dessert more decadent, you could make chocolate pudding and serve these Chocolate Chip Meringue Kisses alongside the pudding with a little whip cream on top!

  1. These look and sound wonderful, Cindy! Thanks for sharing your family recipe. I'll definitely be making them soon!

  2. The meringue kisses look Divine. Nice & airy and I bet so additive to eat. (I bet you can't eat just one) :} My hubby will have to have one in each hand; for balance so he says.
In place of the vanilla you could use Pure Almond Extract or use the clear vanilla by Wilton.

    1. Haha, your husband knows what he's talking about, LOL! Tell him I approve!! Thank you for your tip about the clear extracts, I don't think I've ever bought clear vanilla!

  3. My grandmother made these for my family every single Christmas. I haven't had these in years and look forward to baking a batch very soon.

    1. Oh wow, that's so cool! They must have been really popular back in the day, LOL! Hope you enjoy!

  4. Oh Cindy these sound and look delicious. My SIL makes meringue cookies and I can eat them all in 20 minutes.

These gems look the same for me. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you, yes they go quickly! Happy Valentines Day friend!

  5. Those look yummy! I love the idea of giving a family cookbook as a wedding gift! I have a family member getting married this year and I think that sounds perfect! I wish someone would have made one for me! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you! Isn't a family cookbook a wonderful idea? I have one from my mom as well as my MIL! My mom passed away 15 years ago, so it's extra special to have it!!

  6. These sound amazing; yum! I was thinking of making pink meringue bowls and then putting ice cream and strawberries in. My mom made them for a party one time and I fell in love with meringue. Pinned and will be trying!

    1. Meringue bowls sound really good! I've made Pavlova before but it's too humid here for them to dry out completely! The kisses are small enough that it wasn't an issue ;)

  7. I love family recipes like this. Tried and true are THE best. These would be delicious all year long. From Valentines Day to Christmas-who could resist them? Thanks Cindy.

    1. Thanks Meegan, I agree that family recipes, passed down, are the best! Happy Valentines Day friend!

  8. Oh my these look absolutely yummy! Thank you for sharing the recipe and the printable recipe too! I can't wait to try these!

    1. Thanks Kelly, they are so yummy, your kids will gobble them up!!

  9. I'm so excited to try these! They are so cute and must taste amazing!!! Thanks for the inspiration! ~ Kristin | White Arrows Home

  10. I think that I may be able to adapt your recipe for us by using some sugar substitute and sugar free chocolate chips! I'm going to give it a try soon! They look so delicious!

    1. Yes, that should definitely work! Let me know how they turn out!

  11. Cindy, These look absolutely delicious! And you make the recipe sound so easy. I definitely want to try these. Thank you for sharing your family recipe.

  12. These look almost too pretty to eat, Cindy! I may try my hand at these. I have never tasted a meringue and yours look delicious!

    1. Thank you, they are very easy to make! Let me know what you think ๐Ÿ˜‰
