I can't wait to share all my Christmas ideas with you! This farmhouse beaded wood tray is a great DIY to make any time of the year, but with Christmas coming soon, consider what an amazing gift it would make for someone! The crackle finish gives it a shabby vintage look but if you don't like that, you can certainly leave that step out.

I'm sharing the full supplies list and video tutorial for this DIY beaded wood tray as well as written instructions below. Let's make a beaded wood tray with crackle finish!

How to make a beaded wood tray with crackle finish for $20

Supplies:

Step 1 - stain wood round and finials with wax

Use the foam brush to apply dark wax to the finials and the wood round. Wipe off excess with a rag and set aside to dry (takes about 20 minutes).

Step 2 - crackle and paint the wood round and finials

You can watch the video to see exactly how I do the easy crackle finish using just Elmers glue, as well as watch me put this entire beaded wood tray together.

Brush on Elmers glue to one piece at a time. Leave thinner in some sections, thicker in others. Give it about 5-10 minutes to get tacky; you don't want it to dry completely.

Step 3 - paint wood round and finials

Brush a coat of chalk paint over the Elmers glue. Do this for the wood round as well as the finials. Set them aside to dry completely for 1-2 hours.

Designer tips:
  • be careful not to brush over the same section more than once when painting
  • use foam rounds from Dollar Tree to hold finials while they dry
  • speed drying by using a heat gun

Step 4: faux stain and paint wood beads

Put wood beads into a zip top bag and squirt a little bit of dark brown craft paint (I like Burnt Umber) into the bag. Squirt a little water in, seal the bag and shake and massage to get paint all over beads. Pour beads out on a parchment-paper-lined baking tray to dry.

Once the brown paint is dry, repeat this step with white chalk paint (or whatever paint you're using as your top coat for the tray). Set aside to dry.

Step 5: attach finial feet to wood tray

Using a drill, measure and drill 4 holes on the bottom of the wood round. Make sure to use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw on the finial.

Attach finial feet by screwing them into the holes until tight.

Step 6: glue wood beads around tray top

Finally, use hot glue to attach wood beads around the perimeter of the tray top. Glue the beads hole to hole so that you don't actually see the holes!

If you're confused about any of the steps, please WATCH THE VIDEO TUTORIAL to see exactly how to make this beaded wood tray with crackle finish top and feet!

As you can see, I'm pretty proud of how this gorgeous farmhouse wood tray turned out! I love when the completed project looks just like what you envisioned!

I know I'll be using this wood tray all year long, but I had fun styling it for the holidays, it's beautiful with a few candles and some greenery.

  1. Thanks so much for teaching us the crackle method with school glue and the plastic bag for painting. I think I will use shorter smaller feet but it is a great tray.
