Decorating a Vintage Country Christmas Dining Room

Our dining room is open to the living room, and it's a challenging space to decorate. The window is not center and my black hutch can't be centered on the wall because of the large wall vent.

It does bug me but there's nothing I can do about it, LOL! So my solution is just to fill it with pretty things to distract the eye!

For Christmas this year I have pretty much 100% used what I already own, rather than buying anything new, with the exception of a couple of vintage Santa mugs, which I collect and a new realistic touch cedar garland for my table.

Upcycle and Reuse

I love to repurpose my decor in new ways. For instance, the drop style cheapie ornaments that I upcycled last year and hung on my dining room tree, are used on the dining table at each place setting. They may be a little big but I still like how it looks.

I've had a Christmas tree in the dining room for the last several years, but there was no way to fit one in this space. In case you're new around here, we relocated from TX to MS this summer. You can read more about our journey as a family and why we're currently living in a rental here.

My solution to not being able to have a tree in our dining room, was to put one as close as possible! Our living room tree is visible from the dining room, so that makes me happy! There is just something so special and magical about eating Christmas dinner with the twinkle lights of the tree surrounding you!

Vintage Country Christmas Dining Room

Our table and chairs got pretty beat up in the move and I need to do some touch up with paint. This is a vintage set that we purchased for a steal years ago, and it has worked so well in our homes. I recently recovered the chairs with a blue and white toile tablecloth from Amazon for under $20. It's one of my favorite ways to get a fresh look in the dining room! Even though our chair seats are blue and white toile, I chose not to decorate the dining room with blue and white for Christmas. I've done that in the past, you can see my blue and white French farmhouse Christmas tree in our TX home here. I'm actually sharing a blue and white Christmas bedroom tomorrow.

But my point is that you can break some rules at Christmas! The blue and white seats are very pale and when the chairs are tucked in, you don't even really notice them.

Vintage Country Christmas Dining Table

I set the table a little differently this year. I usually like to use a runner, but this year I folded up a white cotton tablecloth that has a lace edge, and used it as a runner, bunching it down the table. I'm still not sure if I love it, but it's there now and it will stay.

I laid a cedar garland down the table and added a string of fairy lights on a timer. I don't think you can go wrong with brass candlesticks, and rather than a specific centerpiece, the candles fit that bill. I made some dried orange slices for my living room mantel, and had a few leftover, so I added them to the table garland.

For the place settings, I used layers, starting with a red striped woven placemat. I topped that with a white wood charger, then a vintage red transfer plate and a red toile melamine plate (from Target a couple years ago).

What makes this a vintage country Christmas dining room?

Well obviously I'm usually a lot of vintage elements both on the table and in my hutches. But when you think of a country Christmas, don't you think of warm and inviting? A place you'd like to just park yourself for awhile? I try to invoke those feelings when I decorate my home, not just for the seasons.

It's cozy layers, warm colors, soft checks (like these yummy curtains), collections and ways to display those collections that shows you really enjoy them. Some might call it clutter, but it's organized, tidy and cared for.

White cotton napkins with red trim were tied with a red velvet bow, and an attached ornament and I set those on an angle.

To each place setting I added a vintage faux cranberry tartlet that I made using this tutorial from Mother Thyme. She made mini pies, but I had found some of the small vintage Jello molds at the thrift store and opted to use those. I think they turned out so cute!

Vintage Country Christmas Hutch x 2

I squeezed two hutches into this space, the black hutch and my primitive pine cabinet. Of course they were decorated for Christmas as well! I had some overflow Santa mugs after I decorated the vintage Santa coffee and hot cocoa bar in the kitchen, so I added them to the thrifted ironstone pieces in the black hutch.

All the goodies inside coordinate with my Christmas table.

The pine hutch is a favorite to decorate. That warm color looks so good with everything! The red ornament garland draping over the doors was a bit of a happy accident. I was unpacking my garland and that one was all twisted up. After untwisting it, I needed somewhere to hang it while I decided where I was going to use it. This hutch is filled with more thrifted ironstone, bottle brush trees, some vintage Santa postcards that I printed onto cardstock (I get my printable images from The Graphics Fairy) and stuck into vintage flower frogs.

The pine cabinet also adds some of that nice warm wood color to this black and white room!

Yes those are vintage ironstone lids on the wall! My daughter asked me why I hung trash can lids on the wall...geesh...if you have kids, you know that they keep you humble, lol!
