I know it's only August, but many of you are already starting your Fall crafting, so I feel justified in posting this Fall sunflower DIY!

Last year I made the cutest chunky tattered DIY sunflowers. The flowers are palm sized, and so perfect to add to bowls, tuck into cabinets and add a homespun touch to your fall decorations. I used a trick to make those chunky sunflowers extra tattered, and I included steps to make your own, along with a video tutorial that is currently getting a lot of views!

Turmeric Dyed Sunflowers

While I was happy with the original sunflowers, I wanted to make more. I didn't have mustard colored fabric at the time, so for this version of the handmade sunflowers, I decided to try dyeing some drop cloth fabric using  turmeric spice.

Ground turmeric root has a warmth that is the perfect yellow orange color for sunflowers. Dyeing fabric with turmeric is a natural process done without any chemicals, which I know we can all appreciate.

Dyeing fabrics is not hard to do, but I will caution you that turmeric will stain not only your fabric, but your hands, utensils and sink as well!

Turmeric coffee bath

I highly recommend wearing disposable gloves and using dollar store utensils to stir your dyed water bath and the fabric while it's sitting in the dye bath. And if you have a white porcelain sink, I would not use turmeric because that yellow stain will be hard to remove.

Removing turmeric from porcelain

I have had the best success at removing the yellow staining from turmeric using this product.

Coffee deepens color

I found the turmeric alone to be very bright yellow, so I also added some  instant coffee crystals to the dye bath to deepen the color.

Using coffee (or even tea) to create a deeper color in my handmade items is something that I love to do. You can see how I incorporated coffee in the following projects:

This is just a sampling of the projects where I've used coffee to create a deeper color or instant age. So it seemed a no-brainer to use coffee to deepen the color of the turmeric from bright yellow to the deep mustard color that I wanted my DIY sunflowers to have.

Chunky fabric sunflowers

I paired the turmeric dyed drop cloth with this black check homespun that mimics the sunflower head covered in seeds. Isn't it a great combination?

These handmade sunflowers are available in my brand new online store, DIY Beautify Mercantile. You will find it on the SHOP tab at the top of my blog, or click THIS LINK to go directly there. Subscribers get a special discount, look for that in my Sunday newsletter! I'm in the process of adding several handmade items to my shop, including patchwork ghost tees, chenille pumpkins and more! If you love handmade items, be sure to bookmark the site and check back often.

I added a stamped tag affixed with a faux rusty safety pin for extra cuteness and to make these flowers extra giftable or suitable for Fall craft shows.

Have you dyed anything with turmeric before? I would love to know if you're going to try this Fall fabric hand dyed craft.
