Plans to Update a Dark Oak Cabinet

Today I'm sharing my plans to update an oak cabinet in my kitchen using DIY chalky paint and a lot of elbow grease!

Hey there friends! I know it's been awhile since I shared a furniture post, and I'm so glad that you have stuck with me nonetheless! I meant to post this on Monday, but it's been one of those weeks!

Believe me, I have been itching to paint something...other than walls! This week I finally pulled out the paintbrush, mixed up some DIY chalk paint, and got busy.

We have this oak cabinet in our kitchen that just doesn't work. Now I know that some of you would consider painting this piece to be a travesty...and I get it! I love natural wood. However, for our needs and our space, it wasn't working and so I chose to paint it.

The two-piece cabinet was added by the previous owner for extra storage...which I'm very grateful to have, as our kitchen is pretty tight...but it's a dark cabinet...with that busy oak grain...and it doesn't match the rest of the room.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that it's the focal point of the room...you cannot help but notice it immediately upon walking into our kitchen. It's big, it's dark and it's just not that great (sorry fans of 80's oak!)

My plans are to use it for my coffee station as well as to store all my mugs and some of my ironstone and transfer ware collection. But as you can imagine, my pretty pieces just got lost in the dark depths of the cabinet.

And the base just looked tired and dated. Yes, that's a granite insert!

You might recall that I recently painted the kitchen and I am loving the gray walls. It's amazing how paint can instantly boost the feel of a space! That beige ceiling will be going bye-bye soon too...and I cannot wait!

I knew since moving into our home in October that this cabinet would be painted, but I've held off until now because I wasn't sure what color to paint it. The rest of our kitchen cabinets are white, but they're very creamy and I didn't want to try to match a color that I'm not 100% crazy about anyway!

The perfect solution finally came to me, and as I am typing this, I am waiting for the current coat of paint to dry! That's right...I spent the week working on this cabinet, and I can't wait to share the reveal with you next week!

Sorry for the "to-be-continued" nature of this post...but I promise you're going to want to see the completed cabinet! It looks nothing like it used to, and I love the transformation.

What color do you think I picked?

  1. I don't blame you for wanting to paint it! I have a couple of oak pieces I want to paint at least the tops of to start with chalk paint. Are you going to paint it a grey tone? Aqua? I can't wait to see what you choose to do! It may inspire me to tackle my oak pieces as well!
