Thrifty Spring Dining Table Ideas

I challenged myself to decorate our dining table for Spring spending $0 using items I already owned. I realize that we don't have the same stuff, so my challenge to YOU is to shop your home and adapt some (or all) of my ideas below!

This might be my favorite Spring decorated table to date, and it cost nothing!! Let's get started!

No.1: Decorate and display a fake cake with spring flowers

I made a couple of fake cakes last year, and shared the easy tutorial here. I love how displaying this pretty cake makes it look like I've been slaving away in the kitchen all day 😍 I displayed it on a vintage pink milk glass cake stand, and tied a pretty satin ribbon around the cake topped with some faux blush pink peonies. Doesn't it look yummy?

The colors work perfectly in my navy and pink Spring dining room.

Idea No.2: Paint dollar store chargers

I found these awesome gold beaded chargers at Dollar Tree. I'm not counting the cost of $6 towards this project because these are something I will use all year round. I spray painted them white, and here's a great Decor Tip: if you don't have enough spray paint for a project, paint a "primer" coat with a light color (in this case I used the high gloss white), then follow up with the desired color and sheen (in my case, the white satin paint). I had just enough of the satin paint for the final coat! I wound up with great coverage, and my desired color and sheen is the only thing you see!

You can see the results below. It wasn't until I set the table that I realized the beaded trim of the chargers matches my silverware! #win

Idea No.3: Set the table with mismatched plates

I've been collecting white ironstone for years, and don't care that the dishes don't match! In fact I think it adds more charm than using everything that matches! You can see the layered look here.

Of course you don't need to use all white dishes, but find a way to mix and match what you own! The armchairs at the ends of the table also have the navy suede painted wood chargers I made recently.

Idea No.4: Make mini nests in tea cups

Maybe my favorite tip for you today! I used a small handful of Spanish moss and shaped it into a rough nest shape, then gently rested it on top of my blue and white vintage tea cups. A couple speckled eggs, including my chalk painted Easter eggs, fill the nest nicely.

Watch this short video to see how I made the nests:

Idea No.5: Make a set of DIY burlap linen napkins

Spring table decor

I used my Silhouette machine to cut out vinyl words and ironed them to some burlap linen napkins with frayed edges. It adds a custom look to my table, and it was so easy to do! Let me know in the comments if you'd like a tutorial. I was inspired by these ones. I used the wood bead napkin rings that I made for Valentine's Day, and simply turned the wood heart to the back.

I used coordinating pink gingham napkins for the two ends of the table, and you can see that I just laid them across the plates. I think this adds a fun, carefree look to the table...which totally goes with Spring, doesn't it?!

Idea No.6: Use a reproduction sugar mold as a centerpiece

Spring table decor and DIY goblets

I bought this antique reproduction sugar mold on one of our visits to Round Top, but I know they are widely available now. This large one was painted white awhile back.

The narrow style makes it perfect for a Spring centerpiece! I simply tucked in some pink and white flowers that I've owned for awhile (many purchased at Dollar Tree and Walmart). I added some spongy green moss and Spanish moss to disguise the holes. This centerpiece took about 5 minutes to create!

Decor Tip: rather than cutting faux floral stems that are too long, bend them! They'll stand up much better in the vessel you use!

Idea No.7: Decorate some dollar store water glasses

A package of clear water goblets and a glass paint marker are all it took to add a pretty wreath shape to the base of these goblets! I made these, along with some dishes, at Christmas but didn't get around to sharing the tutorial. If you'd like one, please let me know!

Idea No.8: Add something vintage

Spring table and faux florals

I've got a lot of vintage happening on my table, from the collected dishes and tea cups, the pink milk glass water goblets and the candlesticks (all thrifted!). The point is to mix and match new and old for a really charming Spring table!

I hope you found these thrifty decorating ideas helpful! Let me know which one(s) you are inspired to do for your Spring table!
