How to Make a Pom Pom Pillow

A tutorial for an inexpensive pom pom pillow. This pillow is so striking with its cheetah print pumpkin! I'll show you how I did it and how you can make one even if you don't own a Silhouette or Cricut die cut machine!

Have you joined the cheetah print craze that's sweeping the nation?

Okay, maybe it's not having that big of an impact, but I am seeing a lot of cheetah print in the stores these days! On literally everything from hair bows to shoes to bedding!

While I was adding some cozy fall touches to my bedroom this month, the idea for this pillow popped into my head.

I thought it would be fun to add just a touch of pattern in my bedroom, and what's cuter than a cheetah print pumpkin?

Oh, I know...

A cheetah print pumpkin on a pillow with jumbo pom poms, that's what! 😉 (say that 5x fast!)

How to make a cheetah print pillow with pom poms

I think a little cheetah print is so perfect for Fall decor!

But I also love it for other seasons too. For this Fall pumpkin pillow, I decided to cut a pumpkin shape out of cheetah print heat transfer vinyl (HTV).

Last year I purchased some animal print HTV to make home decor and t-shirts and I had several sheets leftover. Don't worry, there's a supplies list a little further down!

It couldn't have been easier to make this pumpkin pillow!

I used my Silhouette machine to cut out a pumpkin shape and then I simply ironed it onto a plain canvas pillow cover using my Cricut Easy Press.

I went to Hobby Lobby searching for black pom pom trim but what I found is even better!

I found this jumbo pom pom trim in ivory. The pom poms are huge and so soft and the perfect color! It's a little pricey, but I used a coupon, and it only took 1 yard to make the cutest edge on my DIY pillow.

Guess where I found it? Right above the box of cotton piping that I used for my fluffy Christmas trees! I guess they keep all the good stuff together (in boxes) so the masses don't see it!?!

Once the pumpkin shape was firmly attached to my cotton pillow cover, I added a nice big feather pillow form and zipped it up.

Finally, I hot glued the pom pom trim onto the edges of the pillow. I started on the side with the zipper and kept it as close as possible to the zipper without covering it.

I just slowly glued the trim all the way around the pillow, holding small sections in place until the glue cooled.

Designer Tip: I love these pom poms so much that I leave the pillow out year-round, I just flip the pumpkin to the back!

I'd love to know what you think of my cheetah print pumpkin pillow!

This pillow reminds me of something you'd find in a boutique. It looks high end, but it cost me less than $10 to make! Sort of like my super cute and inexpensive place mat pillows that you can find here!

Supplies for this project

* You don't need a die cut machine for this project, you can always purchase the HTV vinyl cheetah print pumpkin. But, if you're planning to make t-shirts and home decor regularly, I highly recommend investing in the tools! I got mine for Christmas a few years ago and love using them for tons of projects!

I've used my Silhouette and Easy Press for so many home decor projects and gifts, like these  customized t-shirts, easy iron on kitchen towels, even signs like these large framed wood snowflake signs, and this distressed vinyl sign for fall

I've made canvas signs for nursery gifts that are so easy to customize the sign with baby's name, etc. Personalized gifts are always appreciated.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing how easy and inexpensive it is to make a pom pom pillow with a cheetah print HTV pumpkin!

I'm already thinking up cute things to make for Christmas, because a little cheetah print can work for any season amiright? 😍

Pin it to remember!
