Wood has been a popular medium for home decor and seasonal pieces for years! I'm not just talking about signs, but other items you can make to gift or to decorate your home for Christmas. The downside to wood is that it can be very expensive to use, especially when you're buying it new.

I've got 6 projects to share and they are all either made from discarded wood pieces or are very affordable to DIY ($20 or less). I'm excited to share them all with you today.

It's Thrifty Style Team, and the team is sharing our thrifty DIY Christmas ideas with you today! Each team member, and there's 14 of us, has a minimum of three projects, so you're going to be blasted with inspiration! I hope you're ready for it! Thanks to Julie of Redhead Can Decorate for keeping us on track each month. You will find the full list of links to the projects below.

Crafting with Wood

I have long enjoyed using inexpensive wood to make decorative things for my home. I can't even tell you how many DIY signs I've made over the years, both to keep, to gift and even to sell at craft shows and fairs.

I've got a couple of DIY Christmas signs to share today, but the majority of these projects are made with discarded or very affordable pieces of wood! I hope you like them. Each project has a full tutorial, either a step by step pictorial or a video. I'll drop the links below, just click on the blue links that will direct you to the project.

Thrifty Wood DIY Decor to Make for Christmas

1. Spindle Tree

I knew exactly what I wanted to make with the spindles that I found from a discarded crib rail. It just took me a few years to finally get around to it, lol! Mr DIY helped me and this adorable chippy white spindle tree came together fairly easily!

2. Joy to the World Fence Board Sign

A pile of used and discarded weather-worn fence boards caught my eye one day, and the result is this bright and color DIY Christmas sign. I hung it on my front porch last year (boy do I miss my large front porch!). Our MS home has a narrow front entry that was a challenge to decorate for Christmas. You can see my tips for decorating a small entry for Christmas HERE. But, I found the perfect place for this DIY sign this year! I'm using it in our red and white cottage Christmas guest bedroom.

3. White Crackle Footed Riser

This footed beaded riser was made with some inexpensive pieces I found at the home improvement store. Total cost was around $25. I love using this in my home both during Christmas as well as the rest of the year! A footed riser is a functional piece that can work just as well as a beautiful centerpiece or use it for organization (I have it on the desk in my office right now). The tutorial includes both a step by step pictorial as well as a video tutorial.  You'll find links to both below, but I recommend watching the video to see how to achieve the crackle finish.

Hint: this wood bead tray/riser would make a very nice gift for someone on your list!

4. Wood Snowflake Signs for the Mantel

You could place these DIY wood Christmas signs anywhere in your home, but I think they're especially nice on a holiday mantel! I painted mine black and white, with alternating vinyl snowflakes, but you could make them any color to work with your Christmas decorations! They're bold and beautiful!

5. Vintage Style Wood Stockings

These wood stockings are brand new this year, and I haven't had a chance to write up the tutorial yet. However, I decoupaged some of the stockings and I do have a video where I show how I did that.

6. Chippy Spindle Candlesticks

Finally, we have these charming chippy candle holders that I created a couple of years ago. Another trash to treasure project, these candlesticks were so easy to make and they can be used with either pillar candles or jar candles.

I hope this collection of thrifty wood Christmas DIYs has inspired you! Let me know if you'll be picking up discarded chairs from your neighbor's trash, LOL!
