How to decoupage a patriotic plate wall for no-commitment seasonal decor
What is temporary decoupage?
I came up with this hack, or tip, to apply temporary decoupage designs to my
ironstone. It was born out of desperation, when I was unable to find dishes I
wanted in a certain style and color... but I found napkins! You can see
how I made my own removable vintage looking brown transferware pieces for my
hutch in this post:
Thanksgiving Table with Mismatched Dishes.
Not only is the design temporary, but the method to apply the design is
foolproof and a one-step process.
One-step decoupage
If you have done any kind of decoupage project in the past, you'll know that
you normally brush the decoupage medium onto your project, apply the design,
then brush another coat of decoupage medium to the top to seal the design.
My way is even easier! It's a one-step process using watered down paint. I've
used it for temporary projects, like the one I'll share today, as well as
permanent projects like my
decoupaged pumpkin centerpiece. It's perfect for intricate designs.
My temporary decoupage hack works because by watering down the decoupage medium a little bit, it will soak into the napkin from the top and still provide the same holding coverage, while also sealing the design at the same time! It's an easy, one-and-done timesaving decoupage project!
Let's take a closer look at my patriotic platter wall. I recently hung a
platter wall in the dining area of our new rental home. We're only here for a
year while we get to know the area, so I'm not going all out with the
decor...but this wall needed something pretty! It was a great way to display
some of my ironstone pieces, which I enjoy looking at.
By the way, I used plate hangers for these large platters, but if you're
wanting an easy and cheap way to hang small plates on the wall, using common
items you probably already have at home, AND you need tips for hanging plates
perfectly, check out the tips in this post:

What was the inspiration for a patriotic plate wall?
I found the cutest patriotic topiary napkins at HomeGoods recently, and knew
they needed to become something decorative! My recently installed platter wall
was the ideal candidate for a dose of temporary patriotic style! I have
leftover napkins that I'm selling on Mercari
HERE, in bundles of 5, if you're interested. I've been unable to find these exact
napkins anywhere else.
Here are some similar napkins that would work beautifully for this project:
-
flags and hydrangeas in a blue and white pot
-
patriotic star and eucalyptus napkins
-
blue and white topiary napkins
Opening up the napkin, I realized that I would only need to use a single
napkin to get multiple designs for my platter wall.
If you're a visual learner, you can watch the process of how I decoupaged
these napkins to my platters on
this Instagram reel.
Supplies
- decorative patriotic paper napkins
- plates or platters
- scissors
- Mod Podge or any decoupage medium
- small flat craft brush
- soap and water or rubbing alcohol and wipe
Follow these easy steps to create a decoupage plate in minutes:
- Wash plates and/or platters with hot soapy water or wipe them with rubbing alcohol and let dry
- Open up a napkin and remove the first ply (this ply comes away easily)
- Cut the design out that you plan to use
- Remove the second ply (some are easy, some take a little work)
- Squeeze 1-2 tsp of mod podge (I like using the matte mp) into a bowl
- Add a few drops of water, using a craft brush to stir. You want a chocolate milk consistency. A ratio of 3-1 glue to water works well. If it's too runny, add a little more mp.
- Hold cut out design where you want it on the plate and brush with a light coat of the watered down mp.
Important tip: try not to brush over the same area of the napkin more than once. The watered down glue will make the thin paper napkin very fragile and it can easily tear.
I cut my napkin into various pieces so each platter had a different look. This
was the largest piece. You can see how the red stripes are a little bit
overlapped in areas, but isn't it cool how the crazing on the platter shows
through!
I immediately hung my platters back on the wall and let them dry in place.
Experiment with the design placement
A single napkin can give numerous options. On this platter, I spread the
topiaries out a little bit more.
While on this platter I decoupaged the designs closer together.
And this platter I included the outline of the red stripes and decoupaged it
as a single piece.
What makes this decoupage project temporary?
The beauty of my temporary DIY patriotic plate wall is that when I've tired of
it, the designs are easy to remove using just soap and water! This really
opens up a world of crafting and decorating possibilities when you decoupage
glass or ceramic pieces!
Fun, right?
