Hey friend, are you excited to decorate your home for Fall? I would love to help you! Let me show you a few of my early Fall vignettes, with tips and ideas for layering that may just help you to rethink how you decorate your home for the season.
It may still be steamy here in coastal MS, but Fall is definitely on the way!
The leaves are falling, and the air is slightly cooler in the early mornings
and evenings. My favorite thing this season is sipping my coffee on the porch
in the morning before the sun is fully up. My view is pretty breath taking,
especially considering we just moved from a home with not a single tree in the
yard lol!
How to Layer your Fall Vignettes
I typically plan to take a couple weeks to unpack my Fall bins and spread the
decor around, but inevitably I end up doing it all in one day! I hate having
partial bins lying around.
Our new rental home has fewer display areas than our previous home, but this
gives me the perfect opportunity to create layered vignettes, and they really
are my favorite.
Why you should layer your vignettes
If you like a collected home filled with warmth and interesting corners, then layering is your best friend! Layered vignettes do the following:
- add charm and interest
- create a welcoming and cozy atmosphere
- invite the eye to explore
- are visually appealing
Add a few layered vignettes while you're decorating for Fall, then don't be
surprised if your guests get comfy and stay awhile!
Here are a few corners in my home where I've layered my Fall decorations. I
hope they inspire you!
Dough bowl filled with pumpkins
Many of us own a
dough bowl
or two. The rustic wood is perfect as a base for a simple fall vignette!
Here's how to do it.
- add greenery to dough bowl (this can be stems or even a garland, as I used here)
- nestle pumpkins into the greenery, propping them against one another so their best parts show
Tips:
- include a variety of textures and colors to create a beautiful display
- additional elements can be added, like my chunky tattered sunflowers, or primitive fabric acorns
- check dollar stores for inexpensive elements (that's where these woven and moss pumpkins are from)
Display items in a cloche
Everything looks cuter when shown off under a glass cloche! I found this one
at the thrift store last year (see similar
HERE), but they are available everywhere!
I simply stacked two of my DIY pumpkins inside the cloche, a
pumpkin made from a thrifted sweater sleeve
and another
pumpkin crafted from fuzzy socks.
Tips to remember:
- I think a pumpkin stack like this is more effective when the pumpkins are the same color, it fools the eye into seeing the entire vignette as a solid item, rather than several items.
- layer the cloche onto a wreath to soften the hard edges and add texture
- extend the vignette with a few complimentary elements, like the gingham pumpkin and paper roses
Texture is everything
This tip is so simple it's hardly worth mentioning. Don't just plop a pumpkin
onto a surface and call it done. By simply layering the pumpkin on top of a
wreath base (even if it's just simple greenery), you'll make it look so much
better! How cool is this rustic pumpkin? Want to make your own dupe? Check out

This rustic side table with the grommets was a great choice for this fall
display. Think of your surfaces and how they relate to your
decorations....sometimes throwing a crocheted doily or
rustic table covering
over the surface will change the look entirely!
Think outside the box
Layering is all about adding visual interest. When I was decorating my mantel,
I had a spot that needed something a little bigger, but the area was not big
enough to accommodate anything I tried. Then I remembered my sweet little
chalk painted rabbit. I keep her out year 'round, and because she's a neutral
color (and rather stately lol), she works! Some
tattered cheesecloth ribbon
around her neck adds texture. I paired her next to a
fall leaf garland
and don't the colors look amazing together?
Remember: quirky is charming!
Sometimes less is more
When you're layering, if you add too many pieces (aka tchotchkes), the look
can be overwhelming. Just a couple of pumpkins are all I used on our mantel.
The greenery garland and layered shutters are already a lot. So I kept the
rest pretty simple. Two small pumpkins on one side, and my rabbit over on the
other side. Done.
Tips to keep in mind:
- don't be afraid to rework areas if they don't feel right...but if you don't start, you're not going to finish!
- sometimes, simple is best
- greenery will always add life and layers to any vignette
Include a variety
This Fall vignette may be too much for many of you, and I get it! I really
crammed a lot onto the top of my vintage white dresser! But it is cohesive,
the colors flow together and the look is one that I love!
Tips to remember:
- think various textures when bringing a vignette together (soft and hard, light and dark)
- use those pitchers for displaying your Fall stems like my farmhouse drop cloth sunflowers with homespun check centers
Oh, in case you're wondering...those jack-o-lantern cookies are faux! I'll
be sharing the DIY with you soon!
I hope these ideas inspired you and you're motivated to break out the Fall
bins soon!
