Creating something fabulous from nothing much is one of my favorite things. I'm excited to show you how to make a charming witch hat from a paper bag. You guys, a paper bag! And even if you aren't a fan of primitive style decor, you can customize this paper hat to suit your style.

Some of my most popular ideas started as paper bags! If you've never seen my Copper Magnolia Paper Bag Wreath or my Paper Oak Leaf Garland, be sure to check out those thrifty projects.

Thrifty Halloween Ideas

I've been making spooky cute Halloween decor this year, and sharing most of it either on Instagram or my  YouTube channel. You'll often find bonus ideas that I don't share here on the blog, like this Fall wreath turned Halloween wreath.

I recently put together 13 Spooky Cute Halloween DIY Ideas using black and white everyday items. These Halloween vignettes are full of thrifty ideas for you to copy, many of them using items you probably already have. Click on the link to see them all!

How to Make Paper Bag Witch Hats

These paper bag witch hats are easy and inexpensive to make. They're surprisingly sturdy, so I believe if you pack them carefully away, they will last for years! Not a bad return for $0!

Let's talk supplies. If you're a crafter, you likely already have everything you'll need. If not, the supplies are minimal and ones that you'll be able to use for numerous other crafts.

Supplies Needed

  • paper bags
  • white glue and hot glue
  • black paint (I used this paint)
  • coffee stain (mix 1 cup water with 1/2 instant coffee)
  • cinnamon
  • craft brushes
  • cheesecloth
  • rusty bells
  • muslin or drop cloth scraps
  • alphabet stamps
  • black permanent ink for fabric (I used this ink)

Steps to a Paper Bag Witch Hat

  1. Cut shapes from paper bag and glue together (refer to video tutorial for details)
  2. Paint paper hat black
  3. Snip the bottom for easier display
  4. Brush with coffee stain and sprinkle with cinnamon
  5. Use a dry brush to remove excess cinnamon
  6. Wrap a strip of cheesecloth around brim, glue on some rusty bells
  7. Make a canvas drop cloth or muslin stamped saying and glue to hat

Video Tutorial

I created a full video tutorial so you can watch me make this paper witches hat step by step! It was surprisingly easy to make and I think you'll agree it looks nothing like a paper grocery store bag! In fact, it resembles fabric. Watch me make this DIY witch hat here.

I found multiple ways to display the primitive style witch hat, stained with coffee and cinnamon, and know you'll probably think of many more.

You may not be a fan of primitive style, and that's perfectly okay! Use my tutorial as inspiration, but make your DIY witch hat your own, with ribbon and embellishments that match your style and decor!

Where to display a DIY witch hat

  • top a candlestick
  • add to a pumpkin
  • wire or glue to a Halloween wreath
  • top a Halloween tree
  • display on a stack of spooky books
