I'm sharing how just a few simple changes to the window seat in my office gave it a lighter refresh for summer and disguised some ugly fabric!

Hey there, are you ready for another edition of Thrifty Style Team? My team and I love any kind of decor, DIY and refresh as long as it's thrifty! I'll share the link to the other projects after I show you some simple changes I made in my office, and an easy window seat refresh that's 100% my style!

Window Seat Refresh

My project today is so simple that I can't even really call it a project...it's more of a refresh.

We have been busting our buns getting our master bedroom ready for its big reveal tomorrow (!!) and I haven't had much energy to do any other big projects! In fact (full disclosure) my Easter decor still needs to be put away! That is just how it goes sometimes, right?

Now you may be thinking why on earth I'd even take on a simple project, when I was already painting walls and faux brick-ing walls and giving my bedroom furniture a weathered wood look and even coming up with my own DIY velvet bolster pillow!

Well, our master bedroom opens onto my office, and I knew that when I shared the reveal photos, there would be a few office photos too! So I needed to give it a tidy up and while I was at it, I decided to change things around a little bit for a lighter summer feel.

Enough vague-ness...let me just tell you (and show you) what I did!

New Curtains

First off, I switched out the buffalo check curtains for a lighter pair. I bought these Country Curtains ruffled curtains nearly 20 years ago and I still love them! They pair so nicely with my cordless bamboo shades and add a light and airy feel to the window area.

To see how my modern farmhouse office looked right after its makeover last year, click here. You can see that my rug has changed, and I've brought in some lockers for extra storage.

My desk overlooks a large window into our backyard, and when we moved in, there was a custom window seat cushion. But, I never liked the fabric, so I removed it and stuck it out of the way under our bed!

The window seat has held plants, and pillows and, more recently, a lot of junk! It just got messy and turned into a hoard-all spot and that's what I stared at while sitting at my desk. Quite a distraction from the pretty view outside!

Window Seat Before

Here's a peak at the before. Very uninspiring fabric. It's too bland and doesn't suit my style...and the thought of recovering this enormous window seat cushion was a daunting one! I needed a quick way to update it, and that's when it hit me...

After I had removed the buffalo check curtains, they were laying in a pile on the floor and I decided to see what the window seat would look like wrapped in the curtains! If you know me and my style, I love black and white buffalo check and have a little bit in nearly every room of our home!

All I did was wrap the curtain panels around the window seat and tuck the ends under, for a total transformation in minutes!

We don't use the window seat for actual seating, so it was okay for a couple plants to find a spot, like this sweet live topiary that I'll be sharing a tutorial for soon. I also added some of my favorite black and white pillows to the window seat because it looks cute and adds to the cozy factor!

The view has certainly changed for the better! I love that the window seat looks finished, rather than an unforgotten spot! And the buffalo check is just perfect in this mostly neutral space!

I just couldn't resist a couple pictures of our pup Millie...it's always fun when your pet matches your decor! 😍🐶🐾

Millie definitely is all for another cozy spot to nap!

I hope this post inspires you to see outside the box when it comes to decorating your own home! What trouble area could you disguise by wrapping it in a curtain...or disguising (like this electrical box disguise)...or updating with a coat of paint? You don't have to live with a home that doesn't inspire you! Make it your own friends!

  1. This is interesting to me because I have an unused formal living room we have been talking about turning into an office. It has a window seat and the cushion is just like your old one with a different fabric. Two problems for me, I didn't know how a desk would look positioned in front of the window seat, and what to do about the fabric seat? Both solved. Pinned to remind me I can faux sew!

    1. Thanks Bliss, faux sew is my favorite! I debated long and hard about where to position the desk in this room...I have windows on two walls and doors on the other two. I like how this saves space, and I get a nice view at the same time! Glad to inspire you!
