Hey friend, are you looking to add simple patriotic style to your home this
summer? I'll show you how I created a collected look in my hutch by
repurposing milk glass vases and antique blue mason jars. You're going to love
the charming vintage patriotic style! Pick a cabinet or hutch and recreate
this look using your own pieces!
How to add patriotic style with mason jars and milk glass
You may not know, but we recently moved across the state
(recently as in 10 days ago!). We're in a rental until we decide where
we want to buy. In the meantime, I'm working hard at making this place feel
like home...even with the beige walls lol (I'm not a fan lol).
This home is much smaller, so a lot of our furniture and boxes have gone into
a storage unit. But I was sure to leave out my primitive pine hutch. It has
such great character and is a fun piece to style throughout the year. I
couldn't wait to start unpacking my red, white and blue dishes to add some
patriotic decor to the hutch.
If you know from packing and moving yourself...you think you'll remember where
everything is. But when you get into a different home, it can be very
overwhelming to remember what box holds what. I'm pretty good at labeling
boxes, but there are always a few surprises when unpacking.
Total aside...we moved from Texas to Mississippi three years ago, so we
already had a lot of unpacked boxes from that move that we never unpacked
because we were also renting!
So when one of the first boxes I unpacked was filled with my antique blue
mason jars, it was like meeting old friends again, and I pivoted.
This phone pic makes me laugh because I'm literally surrounded by boxes, rugs,
plants...and I took the time to style the hutch with my mason jars, and add
the large basket to the top! It was a little soul care and a much welcome
break from the tedium of unpacking!
I decided that the mason jars would be the "blue" in my patriotic hutch
styling. If you've followed me for awhile, you'll know I have a lot of vintage
blue transferware dishes that I usually use in my patriotic vignettes (see
here). In truth, I haven't found them yet, but rather than stressing, I'm
shifting my attention, and in all honestly I am quite pleased with the
results!
I stood some ironstone platters on the shelves, then filled in with my milk
glass vases. I've never used doilies in a hutch, but like the look of the
scallops draping over the edge. It somehow softens the overall feel and
enhances the charm.
Those little store-bought flags were coffee stained last year to give them an
antiqued look. You can see how I did it here - Easy Primitive Style Flags with Coffee Stain.
I added one of my handmade Campfire Marshmallow vintage tins filled with clay
marshmallows. The colors are perfect! You can see how I made the vintage tin
from a repurposed food container here - Vintage Inspired Campfire Marshmallow Tin of Treats.
If you look really closely, you'll spot my Frenchified white rabbit
cutting board on the bottom shelf. It's a favorite project, so I keep it out
all year, and it reverses to solid wood. Want to see more? Check out French Rabbit Wood Sign. Here's a closer look at the decorated side and the French label I added.
Back to my hutch. The whole thing came together so easily because I was
decorating with pieces I truly love and using what I had on hand. Let me
challenge you - maybe it's time to rethink some of your pieces and style them
differently than you have in the past!
Oh yes...notice there's a couple chairs missing? They are stuck at the back of
the storage unit! There was a major storm the day we moved in, and in a rush
to get everything out of the rain, some items meant for this house got
overlooked.
Mr DIY and I are hoping to get some help to rescue a few of our pieces...like
the chairs...and the legs of the coffee table that is currently leaning
against the fireplace (oh the joys of moving) 😕
Stay tuned as I share more decorating adventures! I just hung a plate wall in
the dining room and added my quilts to another piece of vintage furniture.
It's all coming together and starting to feel like home.
The hutch is decorated beautifully and is very inspiring. I absolutely love that you posted even while things in your life aren’t perfect. Clearly you are a balanced, adaptive person, and that’s even more inspiring than your decor!
