With July 4 just around the corner, it's the perfect opportunity to talk about
patriotic decor. Specifically styling a basket with red, white and blue decor.
My basket is filled with cottage charm and the softer side of Americana. I'm
going to break it down below so you can easily recreate this look at home.
It's Pinterest Challenge and our theme is "patriotic baskets". Each one of us
will work with the same inspiration image, selected by our hostess
Cindy of County Road 407, and remake it in our own style! If you hopped over here from
Rachel of The Ponds Farmhouse, welcome! I love Rachel's style and I know you'll love seeing how she
decorated her Americana 4th of July basket! You'll have the opportunity to
visit everyone's posts below. It's always fun to see the variety.
Patriotic cottage charm
Before I jump into my vintage cottage styled basket, let's take a look at the
inspiration image, which comes from
Rachel of
The Antiqued Journey.
Inspiration July 4th styled basket
Rachel included many vintage elements in her patriotic basket and I plan to as
well, although some of mine are "vintage inspired" -
a fancy way to say I made them look old using some tricks and hacks!
I'll link to any of my personal projects that you can do yourself to save
money!
- red faux flowers
- Campfire Marshmallows tin
- vintage platters
- thrifted books
- an "eye spy" look-alike element
These challenges are unique in that they are great motivators for thinking outside the box when it comes to decorating your home. The important thing to take away is to really notice what inspires you about any of the projects we share. Then walk around your own home and pull out the items you can use to recreate the look using items you already own!
Celebrating the softer side of patriotic
This is the first opportunity I've had to share my antique chair up close and
personal! I bought it for a song at my d-i-l's momma's garage sale before we
moved from Texas. It sat it storage for 3 years before I finally had the
opportunity to get it out, and realized it was going to need to be
professionally recovered.
That's when I remembered the set of vintage hobnail white chenille bedspreads
I had. They previously hung as curtains in our home in Florida (you can see
how I hung them in
this old post from 2014).
I purchased a couple yards of ticking fabric (for the sides and back) and took
the chair to a local upholsterer. The chair turned out SO cute, and it's
proudly sitting next to my desk in my office. Just look at those curves baby!
I decided to feature the chair with a charming patriotic basket filled with
goodies, so let me show you what I did.
The basket
I used a white wire basket that I've owned for years. It has a little rust
which perfectly reads as cottage charm! The open wire allows the items inside
to be viewed, and the white is perfect for that soft look I'm after.
The flowers
I have some
faux red geraniums
that look just like the real deal. I tucked them into one side of the basket.
I love the bright red color they add to this patriotic cottage style vignette.
The vintage marshmallow tin
The vintage Campfire Marshmallows tins have reached some crazy heights of
popularity, and getting your hands on one for under $100 is nearly impossible.
Last year I made my own using food containers. I've even got faux rust (which
is really fun to do, and smells good because it involves coffee!)
Click here to see how to make these vintage marshmallow tins for just a
couple bucks.
I used one of my
vintage floral wrapped books
to elevate the DIY tin in the basket. And I left the clay marshmallows in the
tin because they look so good, don't they?
The thrifted books
Rachel is right, books are a great way to elevate decor and raise it up so you can view it better. I also added a trio of lace trimmed books to my basket. These are a brand new DIY that I'll be sharing later this week, including my favorite sources for free books! Tucked in the back of my wire basket is both a red platter and a blue plate.
One is vintage and one is a reproduction. Can you tell which is which? I love
using dishes in seasonal displays, just check out these recent posts featuring
vintage dishes used for decoration:

The "eye spy" element
I spy something black and white. As I was editing my images, this one made me laugh. Unbeknownst to me, Millie (my little shadow) tucked herself into the shot lol! When I looked back at the inspiration image, Rachel has part of a ceramic black and white dog in her shot too!
I decided Millie needed to be fully appreciated, so I stepped back a little.
The little stinker started to move, which is why she's blurry. But at least
she's looking at the camera ❤
The vintage accessories
Rachel added a lot of little vintage items to her basket, but I felt mine
was full enough. I tucked in a few of my
DIY chippy white spindles, opting to leave the red and blue ones out. I feel the floral pillow
and that darling
blue ticking striped pillow
act as accessories even though they're not in the basket.
The beauty of creating a vignette in a basket is it can easily be picked up
and moved. This corner of my office is where I spend my mornings with Jesus,
sipping coffee. As I was decorating this space, I decided to try my chippy
arched window above the chair and it was a perfect fit. It adds texture and
interest to the green walls, which I don't love, but won't be changing
because we're only here for a year.
I hope my charming cottage patriotic basket gave you lots of ideas!

else decorated their patriotic baskets!
What a creative basket Cindy. I love the way you can see through it. You had the perfect tin and I love the addition of the spindles.
ReplyDeleteI love this patriotic basket idea and your chair is a great background for it. Thanks for the inspiration.
