Don't these blackberries look juicy and ripe? They're faux and completely inedible, but they are incredibly realistic and will make the perfect summertime prop. You can even decorate a fake cake with these look-alike berries!

I'm excited to walk you through the tutorial for these fake blackberries. They are a little time consuming, but a great project for a lazy summer afternoon! And once you've made a few faux berries, you'll be hooked!

Faux berries add non-perishable summer delight to your decorations. Let's jump into the tutorial below, or check out this short video reel from my Instagram channel.

How to make fake blackberries

I used foam that I found at Dollar Tree for my blackberries, but any foam would work. I do suggest buying white rather than green florist foam.

Supplies you'll need for this project

styrofoam, hot glue, paint, toothpics

Directions

Please look at the collage below for step by step details to making blackberries from foam, and the written instructions are below that.

steps to create faux blackberries from foam

Step 1

Use a serrated knife to cut foam into approximately 1" pieces, using fingers to press and round edges.

Step 2

Insert a toothpick securely into one end of the foam. Starting at the base, hot glue foam beads to cover foam cube. Repeat until cube is covered.

Note: you can see how much bigger the finished blackberry is once the beads are attached. Keep this in mind when cutting your foam cubes.

Step 3

Mix blue, black and purple acrylic paint together to get a deep blackish purple color. Paint the blackberries, then set aside to dry by inserting toothpick ends into foam.

Step 4

The dried blackberries will be a dull matte finish. To add a glossy, juicy appearance, coat blackberries in glossy mod podge and once again set aside to dry thoroughly.

Remove toothpicks and now your faux blackberries are ready to style in your summer decor! Add them to a bowl.

Or decorate a fake cake with your faux blackberries and see who you can fool lol! The only thing edible on my blackberry cake are the basil leaves that I grabbed for a little green!

I love these DIY blackberries paired with the blackberry stems from Hobby Lobby. I added some vintage thrifted dishes to a rustic tote. Along with the blackberries, this is a look that you can use right up through fall.

The beauty of faux blackberries is they can be used all year long and will never perish! I love them in a patriotic hutch along with vintage milk glass and mason jars.

p.s. if you're wondering about the blueberries, they are made from this clay. Simply make small balls, and use a toothpick to create the star shape at the end. Let them dry and paint.
