We'd only been in our new home for a few days when our son decided to make watermelon agua fresca. We'd never tried it before, but Mr DIY had just bought a huge watermelon and any reason to use it was welcome 🍉🍉🍉

This tasty drink ended up being the perfect refreshment as we were busy unpacking boxes and working (and sweating!) Since then we've made it a few more times because watermelon is so good and plentiful this time of year! And did I mention it was a very large watermelon!

You really only need a few simple ingredients to make this invigorating summer drink! If you have a high speed blender, like a Vitamix, you'll be able to whip this refreshment up in just minutes! We've owned our Vitamix for close to a decade, and while we don't use it daily, it is so handy for making blended smoothies and other recipes (we love this healthy banana oats pancake recipe, made in the blender). I'm a little shocked at how much more affordable this quality blender is these days! I remember paying well over $400 for ours!
My son made watermelon agua fresca following this recipe from Food Wishes. Looking the recipe over, I decided to try another version, omitting the sugar and replacing it with a little agave and some fresh squeezed lime.

My version turned out good too, but I'll admit it wasn't as good as the one my son made with the simple syrup!

The 'original' version doesn't really get any simpler! It's just watermelon, water and simple syrup to taste.

If you want to jazz up this drink for July 4th, add a few blueberries (and even a blackberry or two) to the glasses.

I set a quick summer drinks bar over on our console that's serving as a coffee bar. I love this mason jar vintage style drink dispenser that Mr DIY bought me a couple years ago ( see similar here). We love using it to make spa water (cucumber, orange slices and fresh mint or any variety of citrus and fruit).

A few patriotic paper straws and some mini flags are an easy way to add American spirit for the holiday!

To continue the theme, I brought my DIY ribbon wreath inside and hung it on our antique chippy window.

We love using these pint size mason Ball jars as glasses, and the clear color really lets the bright color of the agua fresca shine through.

A small wedge of watermelon on the glass makes this drink so festive for parties and gatherings! I know we'll be enjoying it all summer long.

Have you tried watermelon agua fresca before? I'd love to know how you make it! Leave me a comment below.
